Castle ambience for D&D
A great hall is a hearth, a tight room on the bed, and footsteps carrying from far away. The recipe and the environment to play.
A castle interior is a hall loop at 55% with a hearth at 35% under it, and footsteps every six seconds pushed far and dropped to 35%. Distance, not reverb, is what makes the room big — the bed's own room is set tight. Feasting ships switched off, which is what separates a hall in use from a feast.
What it sounds like
The instinct in a great hall is to reach for reverb, and this environment deliberately does not. The bed is set tight, the lowest room setting any of these fifteen use. What makes the hall feel forty feet high is the footsteps: every six seconds, pushed far, dropped to 35% so they arrive worn down by the distance they travelled.
That is a more useful trick than a long tail, because distance survives a conversation and reverb does not. A hall drenched in reverb smears every word anybody says across the table. A hall built out of far-away footsteps stays legible, and still tells everyone the room is enormous.
The second restraint is about people. There are courtiers and servants in a hall and the temptation is to put them in as a crowd — which instantly turns it into a tavern. The feasting layer exists and ships off. Turn it on for a banquet and leave it off for an audience.
The recipe, dial by dial
This is the environment as it ships. Every layer is the same kind of thing — one sound from the library and a set of dials — so there is nothing special about which slot a sound sits in. The names are only names.
| Layer | Sound | How often | Wander | Volume | Distance | Reverb | Echo |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hall | Great hall | loop | — | 55% | close | tight | off |
| Hearth | Quiet hearth | loop | — | 35% | close | off | off |
| Footsteps | Footsteps: stone | every ~6.0 s | 70% | 35% | far | medium | 1 bounce |
| Doors | Doors & latches | every ~60 s | 70% | 50% | far | medium | 1 bounce |
| Feasting (off) | Laughter | every ~40 s | 70% | 50% | far | medium | 1 bounce |
Master volume 80%. Every number above is read out of the environment that ships in the app, and printed in the words the app prints beside each slider.
- Hall — 55%, with the room set tight. The hall already sounds like a hall; it does not need help.
Great hall - Hearth — 35%. Every castle interior in this library has one, and it is what stops the stone sounding cold.
Quiet hearth - Footsteps — Every six seconds, far, 35%. The whole illusion of scale is in this one row.
Footsteps: stone - Doors — A minute apart, far. Somewhere out of sight, the castle is going about its business.
Doors & latches - Feasting — Off. The difference between a hall in use and a banquet is this checkbox.
Laughter
What each dial does is covered once, properly, in Environments & layers.
Boards to load with it
The environment is the place; boards are the things that happen in it. These three ship built in and suit this one:
Load them, then press + New scene and the environment and the boards come back together next week in one tap. Scenes covers that.
Make it yours
The throne room
Throne Room ships built in and is the colder version: less hearth, more stone, voices further off. Use it when the party is being received rather than fed.
A hall at night
Feasting off, hearth down to a third, footsteps out to one every twenty seconds. The room is the same size and nobody is in it, which is a useful sound to have.
Up on the walls
Battlements, Night is built in: wind replaces the hearth and the reverb goes entirely, because outdoors there is nothing to bounce off.
None of this is destructive: the built-in environments cannot be overwritten. Change what you like, and press Save a copy as… when it sounds right.
The recordings
Every sound this environment uses, and who recorded it. Most of the library is public domain; the Creative Commons Attribution recordings are credited here because that is what the licence asks for. The full list is on Sounds & licensing.
