Tavern ambience for D&D
A tavern is a crowd loop at 60%, a hearth under it, and mugs every eight seconds. The full recipe and the environment, ready to play.
A tavern is a crowd loop at 60% with a hearth at 35% underneath, and four things happening over the top: mugs every eight seconds, laughter every twenty-five, a lute and a door further off. The crowd itself stays completely dry. Reverb on a room full of people turns a tavern into a cathedral.
What it sounds like
A tavern is the hardest of these to get right, because the failure mode is so pleasant. Put on a good crowd loop, turn it up, and it sounds wonderful for ninety seconds. Then somebody has to say something important, nobody can hear them, and you spend the rest of the night with a hand on the volume.
The fix is in the layering, not the level. A crowd loop on its own has no events in it — nothing ever happens — so the ear files it as noise and starts straining past it. Put mugs every eight seconds over the top and the brain gets something to latch onto and relaxes about the rest. That is why this one can sit at 60% and still leave room for a conversation.
Notice what is on its own layer here: the laughter, the lute and the door. Those are the three things players actually react to, and having each on a separate layer means you can take any of them out in one tap when the scene stops being a nice evening.
The recipe, dial by dial
This is the environment as it ships. Every layer is the same kind of thing — one sound from the library and a set of dials — so there is nothing special about which slot a sound sits in. The names are only names.
| Layer | Sound | How often | Wander | Volume | Distance | Reverb | Echo |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Crowd | Tavern crowd | loop | — | 60% | close | off | off |
| Fire | Quiet hearth | loop | — | 35% | close | off | off |
| Mugs | Mugs clink | every ~8.0 s | 70% | 50% | nearby | medium | 1 bounce |
| Laughter | Laughter | every ~25 s | 70% | 50% | nearby | medium | 1 bounce |
| Bard | Bard's lute | every ~60 s | 70% | 50% | far | medium | 1 bounce |
| Door | Doors & latches | every ~50 s | 70% | 50% | far | medium | 1 bounce |
Master volume 80%. Every number above is read out of the environment that ships in the app, and printed in the words the app prints beside each slider.
- Crowd — Dry, at 60%. A tavern is a low room full of bodies, and bodies absorb — the reverb stays at off, which is the single most-missed setting in the app.
Tavern crowd - Fire — 35%, which is about half the crowd. It is what stops the room sounding like a recording of people.
Quiet hearth - Mugs — Every eight seconds, wandering 70%. This is the layer that makes the room feel occupied rather than merely loud.
Mugs clink - Laughter — Every twenty-five seconds, nearby. One laugh you did not schedule lands better than a loop of merriment.
Laughter - Bard — A minute apart and far, so there is someone playing in the corner without a soundtrack starting.
Bard's lute - Door — Every fifty seconds, far. People keep arriving. Switch it off and the tavern quietly becomes a closed room.
Doors & latches
What each dial does is covered once, properly, in Environments & layers.
Boards to load with it
The environment is the place; boards are the things that happen in it. These three ship built in and suit this one:
Load them, then press + New scene and the environment and the boards come back together next week in one tap. Scenes covers that.
Make it yours
Late night, nearly empty
Tavern, Late Night ships built in, but you can get there from here: crowd down to about 25%, mugs out to one every fifteen seconds, laughter off. The hearth becomes the loudest thing in the room, which is exactly right.
The room upstairs
Push the crowd far and leave everything else. The party is in a room over the bar and the night is going on without them.
A tavern brawl
Do not rebuild the environment — load a board. The room stays where it is and you tap the fight on top of it. The brawl ends when you stop tapping, and the tavern is still there underneath.
None of this is destructive: the built-in environments cannot be overwritten. Change what you like, and press Save a copy as… when it sounds right.
The recordings
Every sound this environment uses, and who recorded it. Most of the library is public domain; the Creative Commons Attribution recordings are credited here because that is what the licence asks for. The full list is on Sounds & licensing.
