How to build a tavern soundscape
A worked example: crowd, fire and the occasional mug, built from scratch in about five minutes.
Start from the nearest built-in
Open the Environments screen and pick a tavern from the Town family, then Save a copy as… and give it your own name. Starting from something close and editing it is faster than starting empty, and the original is never modified.
Set the crowd as your bed
The bed is the layer that plays the whole time. A tavern's bed is people: a crowd loop at around 55–65% volume. Leave Distance near zero if the party is in the room, or push it to about a third if they are upstairs and the noise is coming through the floor.
Add a fire, quietly
A second loop — a hearth — at about half the crowd's volume. You are not trying to hear it as fire; you are filling the low end so the crowd does not sound thin. If you can clearly pick it out, turn it down.
Put mugs and laughter on random layers
Add two random layers: mugs or glasses on a short cadence (every few seconds, randomness high), and laughter on a long one (every thirty seconds or so). The randomness dial matters more than the frequency — at 70% or above the ear stops predicting them.
Give the room a size
A little reverb on the crowd and the accents makes the room feel enclosed. Tight for a low cellar bar, medium for a common room with a beamed ceiling. Too much and it stops sounding like a tavern and starts sounding like a cathedral.
Keep the door for later
Do not put the door on the environment. A door is a moment, not a background — put it on a board so you can hit it when someone walks in.
A tavern that turns hostile
Save a second copy with the crowd dropped to a third, the laughter layer switched off and a low drone added. Switching chapters between the two crossfades the room from cheerful to tense without you touching a dial. That contrast lands harder than any single sound.
Sounds worth having on the board
A door, a mug set down hard, a chair scraping, a bar fight starting. Four buttons covers most of what actually happens in a tavern scene.
