Ship at sea ambience
A ship is a structure under load: hull every five seconds, rigging every eight, and a bell twice an hour. Recipe and environment.
A ship at sea is a deck loop at 60% with timber and rope working over it — hull creaks every five seconds, rigging every eight, both nearby. That constant working is what makes it a ship rather than a shoreline. Gulls place it near a coast; the bell, twice an hour, is the only thing a person aboard did on purpose.
What it sounds like
Water is not enough. A hull loop on its own is a beach, and what separates a ship from a shore is that a ship is a structure under constant load. Timber complains. Rope creaks. Something knocks, somewhere below.
So the two fastest layers here are both structural and both nearby: hull every five seconds, rigging every eight. Between them something is making a noise roughly every three seconds, which sounds relentless written down and reads as a working ship in the room.
The events carry a medium room, which is worth noticing because on open water you might expect none at all. A deck is not open water: there is a hull under it, canvas above it and a lot of timber in between, and that is what a medium setting sounds like.
The recipe, dial by dial
This is the environment as it ships. Every layer is the same kind of thing — one sound from the library and a set of dials — so there is nothing special about which slot a sound sits in. The names are only names.
| Layer | Sound | How often | Wander | Volume | Distance | Reverb | Echo |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Deck | Ship at sea (on deck) | loop | — | 60% | close | off | off |
| Hull | Hull creaks | every ~5.0 s | 70% | 50% | nearby | medium | 1 bounce |
| Rigging | Rope creak | every ~8.0 s | 70% | 50% | nearby | medium | 1 bounce |
| Gulls | Gulls | every ~30 s | 70% | 50% | far | medium | 1 bounce |
| Bell | Ship's bell | rare, every ~120 s | 70% | 50% | nearby | medium | 1 bounce |
Master volume 80%. Every number above is read out of the environment that ships in the app, and printed in the words the app prints beside each slider.
- Deck — 60%, and the only thing that never stops. Water against a hull.
Ship at sea (on deck) - Hull — Every five seconds, nearby. The ship taking the sea.
Hull creaks - Rigging — Every eight seconds, nearby. Rope under load — the sound that says sail rather than engine.
Rope creak - Gulls — Thirty seconds, far. Gulls mean land is somewhere; drop this layer and the ship is suddenly a long way out.
Gulls - Bell — About every two minutes. The only deliberate human sound on the ship, and the one to reach for when the watch changes.
Ship's bell
What each dial does is covered once, properly, in Environments & layers.
Boards to load with it
The environment is the place; boards are the things that happen in it. These three ship built in and suit this one:
Load them, then press + New scene and the environment and the boards come back together next week in one tap. Scenes covers that.
Make it yours
Below deck
Below Deck ships built in and is the enclosed version: the water muffles, the timber gets louder, and there is finally a room worth putting reverb in.
A storm at sea
Storm at Sea is built in. To get there from here, raise the gusts, double the hull and add thunder far and rare.
Out of sight of land
Turn the gulls off. One checkbox, and the ship is in open ocean. It is the clearest example in the library of a layer carrying a whole fact about a scene.
None of this is destructive: the built-in environments cannot be overwritten. Change what you like, and press Save a copy as… when it sounds right.
The recordings
Every sound this environment uses, and who recorded it. Most of the library is public domain; the Creative Commons Attribution recordings are credited here because that is what the licence asks for. The full list is on Sounds & licensing.
