THAUMATURGYSet the scene. Run the game.

Terms

The agreement for using Thaumaturgy: your account, what you build, what you send us, and what a free beta does and doesn't promise.

Thaumaturgy is made and run by Beckham Enterprises. Using the app, this site or a broadcast means you accept what is on this page. It is meant to be read rather than scrolled past — if a line here is unclear or seems unfair, say so through the feedback form and it will be looked at.

The privacy page says what is stored and how to get rid of it, and the copyright page says how to report material that shouldn't be here. Both are part of these terms.

What this is

A free open beta, and that is not a figure of speech. The app changes most days, features arrive and occasionally leave again, and there is no promise it will be running tomorrow or next year. Nothing is sold and nothing is charged for. If that ever changes you will be told before it happens, not after.

Because it is free there is no service level and no uptime guarantee. Don't put anything on it you can't afford to lose — environments and boards can be exported, and it is worth doing for anything you'd be sorry to lose.

Who can use it

Anyone can use the app. An account needs a working email address and you need to be at least 13 years old to have one. The app isn't directed at children under 13 and accounts aren't knowingly kept for them.

Your account

An account is optional — most of the app works without one. If you make one, you're responsible for what happens under it. Sign-in links go to your email address, so anyone who can read that email can get into the account; treat it with that in mind.

You can delete the account yourself at any time from the footer of the app, and it goes immediately. We can also close an account being used to break these terms, and you'll be told why.

What you build is yours

The environments, boards, scenes and campaigns you make belong to you. We don't claim any ownership of them, don't use them for anything of our own, and don't show them to anybody. The only things done with them are storing them so they reach your other devices, and sending the scene to a listener's browser while you're broadcasting — which is the entire point of broadcasting.

Our sounds

The built-in library is public-domain recordings and clips made for Thaumaturgy. Use what you build with it in your games, and in recordings or streams of your games, crediting nobody. What you may not do is take the library itself: extracting the audio files to redistribute, package, resell or build another sound library out of them is not allowed, whatever the underlying recordings are licensed as. Sounds & licensing has the full picture.

What you send us

Parts of the app take something from you — a campaign cover, feedback, a sound report. You keep ownership of all of it. You give us permission to store it and show it back to you, and to anyone you deliberately share it with, and nothing beyond that. We don't sell it, don't show it to other users, and don't train anything on it.

What you send has to be yours to send. Nothing you don't hold the rights to, nothing illegal, nothing built to attack the app or the people using it, and nothing involving children. Anything that breaks this is removed when we find out about it.

We don't screen what you send before it is stored, and we're under no obligation to go looking. What we do is act on reports — see the copyright page.

Broadcasting

A broadcast sends what you're playing to whoever holds your code. You choose what to play and who to invite, and you're responsible for both. Thaumaturgy doesn't record a broadcast, doesn't keep one after it ends, and has no way for anyone here to listen to one.

Using it honestly

Don't try to break it. Specifically: no scraping the library, no hammering the API, no sweeping the six-digit codes looking for other people's games, no reselling access, no impersonating anyone, and no using the sign-in form to send mail to addresses that aren't yours. Rate limits make most of this fail on its own; doing it deliberately is a reason to lose the account.

Repeat infringers

An account used more than once to share material that isn't the holder's to share will be closed. That's a standing policy rather than a threat, and the copyright page sets out how it works in practice.

No warranty

Thaumaturgy is provided as it is and as it happens to be working, with no warranty of any kind — not that it will work, not that it will keep working, not that it suits what you want it for. You use it at your own risk.

Limits on liability

So far as the law allows, Beckham Enterprises isn't liable for what you might lose by using the app: lost data, a session that didn't go to plan, or the app being down when you needed it. Nothing here removes a right you hold that can't be signed away.

Ending it

Stop whenever you like; delete the account from inside the app. We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, or stop running the service altogether — and if it is ever shutting down there will be notice first and a way to get your data out.

Which law

These terms are governed by the law of the State of California in the United States, and a dispute goes to the courts there. If you're a consumer somewhere whose own law gives you protections, this doesn't take those away.

Changes

When these terms change in a way that matters, the change and its date are recorded at the bottom of this page, the same way the privacy page does it. Carrying on using the app after a change means accepting it.
